Squatting has been prohibited in the Netherlands since 2010 and the โSquatting Prohibition Enforcement Actโ has made it possible since 2022 to expedite the eviction of squatters from a building if there is at least a case of red-handedness. However, due to the extreme housing shortage, the number of proponents of legalizing squatting appears to be growing considerably, based on a recent survey conducted among 24.000 Dutch people.

Squatting has been in the news more often lately. Not only in Amsterdam do you see an increase in squatted buildings, but also in other cities such as Nijmegen, Rotterdam, and even smaller municipalities notice that squatting of vacant objects is a permanent problem.

The story of a temporary entrepreneur

In the village of Lathum, where only 550 people live, the village council plays a central role. Thanks to a collaboration with the municipality and Alvast, the village council has managed to create a unique space for the residents. What was once an abandoned school building is now a vibrant village hall where young and old come together.
